What rodents are common in Brisbane?

The most common rodent species encountered in Brisbane properties are the Roof Rat (Rattus rattus), the Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the House Mouse (Mus musculus). Roof Rats are particularly common in Brisbane and are agile climbers that readily access roof voids via trees, power lines and fences. Norway Rats tend to burrow and are more commonly found at ground level. Identifying the species present helps inform the most effective management approach.

Are the bait products used safe around children and pets?

We use tamper-resistant bait stations that are designed to prevent access by children and non-target animals. The bait is contained within the station and is not accessible from the outside. How long does a rodent management program take to work?

Ongoing monitoring and servicing of bait stations is important to maintain control and identify any new activity.

Do I need an ongoing program or is a one-off treatment sufficient?

For most properties, an ongoing monitoring and baiting program provides more effective and sustained control than a single treatment. Rodents can re-enter a property from surrounding areas, particularly where conducive conditions remain. An ongoing program allows activity to be monitored, bait to be maintained and any new activity to be identified and addressed promptly. What can I do to reduce rodent pressure on my property?

Reducing conducive conditions is an important part of rodent management. Practical steps include sealing gaps around pipes, cables and conduits, repairing damaged roof tiles and eaves, removing harbourage materials such as stored timber and debris, managing vegetation adjacent to the building, securing food sources including pet food and compost, and maintaining waste bins with tight-fitting lids. We provide specific proofing and exclusion recommendations as part of our management program.

Can rodents cause structural damage?

Yes. Rodents gnaw continuously to wear down their teeth and can cause significant damage to electrical cables, plumbing, insulation, timber framing and other building materials. Gnawed electrical cables are a known fire risk. Rodents can also contaminate food and food preparation surfaces and are associated with a range of health risks. Early detection and management is important to minimise damage and risk.
